Friday took the train to Margate with Melissa and Laurie. The train left from Victoria but I went up to St Pancras first to meet Melissa. She had so many bags it was hilarious as we rushed thru the station and onto the tube to get back to Victoria in time! Got there 5 mins before the train pulled out! 90 min journey to Margate, arriving around 11pm and Mark met us with the van. Stayed at a B and B but got very little sleep as it was soo hot, had the windows open wide and there were a load of noisy kids outside for half the nite and cars driving past and then birds and then the sun came up--was impossible to sleep!
2 awesome days completed on the beach at Ruislip--Londons stop on the Volleyball England Beach Tour. I camped out in a shed with Laurie and Lenore beside the Lido--a large man made lake on the outskirts of London. Being a small beach we were more compact with only 5 courts making for a slightly easier setup. I played with a pick up partner from Portugal who turned out to be below average and we didn't win a game!!
The Skegness Open is the first tournament on the Volleyball England Beach Tour. Friday nite I drove up in the 50 tonne tour van with Mark (beach coordinator) and Laurie (acting beach commission president). Along the way we made the mistake of stopping for food at a Little Chef restuarant about 5 miles from Cambridge where the croutons in the ceasar salad were large chunks of deep fried bread that they had just fried in the same fat as everything else that week! we ate the chicken and not much else! Arrived in Skegvegas around 23:30 and set up tents and jumped into bed. There was a large contingent of players all camping for free on a sports field provided by the council.
Nelson Mail: Sarah Baldwin and Erin McCulloch had to work hard to claim the women's crown at Saturday's Brightwater beach volleyball tournament. The Blue Chip Nelson pair were taken to three sets by the Biopaints duo of Anna Chamberlain and Jess Harris before clinching the title.
They dropped the opening set 12-21 before recovering to win the next 21-18 and the decider 15-9.
Baldwin and McCulloch beat Jelena Vucinic and Melissa Duff 21-10 21-8 and Chamberlain and Harris beat Nadia Hylkema and Ashleigh Hancock 21-13 21-11 in their respective semifinals.
